In parallel to the Geneva Motor Show, in the spring of 2014, the Bavarian automaker held a virtual premiere of its new BMW X4 crossover, distributing photos / videos of the production version and almost all technical data ...

The appearance of the BMW X4 was created on the basis of the X6 coupe crossover, so that the novelty can be safely considered its “younger brother” or “reduced copy”. But if the “big brother” has an impressive and aggressive image, then the “X4” is a typical compact crossover, which the Bavarians tried to “challenge” as much as possible, which made it look even more like a coupe, especially in the version with the optional “M Performance” package. ", Bringing understated ground clearance and stylish body kit.

In terms of dimensions, the "fourth" is similar to the "X3" (which became the main donor of components and assemblies for this novelty).

The body length of the "junior sport-SUV-coupe" is 4671 mm, the width is 1881 mm, the height is limited to 1624 mm, and the wheelbase is similar to that of the "donor" - 2810 mm. The height of the ground clearance (clearance) is 204 mm, but for Russia it was raised to 212 mm (that is, to the "X3 level").

The curb weight of the crossover-coupe ranges from 1805 to 1935 kg and depends on the equipment level, as well as the type of engine installed.

The drag coefficient of the body is 0.33 Cx.

The compartment of the "coupe-like" can accommodate five passengers, but their seating is made more sporty in comparison with the "X3" - the front seats are lowered by 20 mm, and the rear ones by 28 mm.

There is quite enough free space in the front, but in the back of the BMW X4, in the head area, a lack of freedom is possible, especially for tall passengers.

The rest of the X4 interior is similar to the "donor" both in terms of layout and design.

The only noticeable difference is the trunk, which is less spacious here - 500 liters in the base and 1400 liters with the rear row of seats folded down.

Specifications. The line of BMW X4 engines is similar to that for the X3, but without the youngest diesel engine, so that the final list of power units includes three gasoline and three diesel engines.

  • The role of the junior gasoline engine, inherited by the modification xDrive20i, performs a 4-cylinder unit with a working volume of 2.0 liters, capable of developing up to 184 hp. power and about 270 Nm of torque.
  • For version xDrive28i the Germans prepared the same engine, but with a greater degree of boost, thanks to which its power increased to 245 hp, and the peak torque rose to 350 Nm.
  • Top-end gasoline engine (modification xDrive35i) became a 6-cylinder in-line turbo unit with a displacement of 3.0 liters, capable of producing 306 hp. maximum power and 400 Nm of torque.

All gasoline engines are paired only with the 8-band "automatic" ZF.

  • The list of diesel power units opens with a 4-cylinder 2.0-liter engine with a return of 190 hp. and a peak torque of 400 Nm, installed on modifications xDrive20d.
  • For execution xDrive30d a 6-cylinder engine with a working volume of 3.0 liters is provided, "harnessing" 258 "horses" and 560 Nm.
  • In the "top" diesel version xDrive35d the same engine receives an additional turbine, due to which the engine power increases to 313 hp, and the peak torque rises to 630 Nm.

For all diesel engines, an 8-range "automatic" ZF is also provided, but the junior engine in the base receives a 6-speed "mechanics" (inaccessible for other power plants).

All BMW X4 engines are fully compliant with Euro 6 standards. In the combined cycle, gasoline engines, depending on the modification, eat up from 7.2 to 8.3 liters of fuel, and diesel engines are limited to 5.4 - 6.0 liters.

The fastest acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is demonstrated by the xDrive35d, which takes 5.3 seconds, while the slowest version of the xDrive20i completes this distance in 8.1 seconds. The maximum speed of the X4, depending on the version, varies in the range of 212 - 247 km / h.

As we have already noted, this model is built on the chassis of the BMW X3, so the X4's suspension design is familiar: the front is a double wishbone, and the rear is a multi-link system. Meanwhile, this crossover from BMW has received tighter settings and increased wheel track to target a sportier driving style. The Germans installed ventilated brakes on all wheels, and the rack and pinion steering gear was supplemented with an electric booster with a variable gear ratio. All modifications are already in the base equipped with the xDrive all-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch that connects the front axle.

Options and prices. The compact cross-coupe BMW X4 is already in the "basic" configuration equipped with ABS, EBD and BAS systems, as well as start / stop functions, braking energy recovery and ECO PRO and adaptive sports steering Servotronic. In addition, all trim levels will be equipped with bi-xenon headlights, parking sensors (both rear and front), climate control, heated front seats and an automatic boot lid.

The xDrive28i and xDrive30d are fitted with 17 ″ alloy wheels as standard, while the xDrive35i and xDrive35d have 18 ″ alloy wheels.

The start of sales of the BMW X4 in Russia took place at the very end of the summer of 2014 - on August 23. Initially, the following crossover options were proposed (two diesel and two petrol, all with an 8-speed "automatic"):

  • petrol xDrive28i (245 HP) at a price of 2 304 thousand rubles
  • diesel xDrive30d (249 hp) at a price of 2,460 thousand rubles
  • petrol xDrive35i (306 HP) at a price of 2,510 thousand rubles
  • diesel xDrive35d (313 hp) at a price of 2,714 thousand rubles.
